5 Common Solar Myths in Ireland (And the Truth Behind Them)

As more Irish homes go green, there is still plenty of "pub talk" and outdated information circulating about solar energy. Whether it's skepticism about our weather or confusion over the cost, these myths often stop people from making a switch that could save them thousands.

Let's set the record straight with the facts for 2026.

Myth 1: "Ireland is too cloudy for solar panels to work."

The Truth: Solar panels run on daylight, not just direct sunlight. While a cloudless sky is great, modern photovoltaic (PV) cells are designed to capture "diffuse light"—the kind that filters through our typical grey Irish skies. In fact, Ireland receives a similar amount of solar radiation annually as parts of Germany, a world leader in solar energy.

  • Fact: A typical 4kW system in Ireland will still produce roughly 3,600 to 4,000 kWh of electricity per year, even with our famous "four seasons in one day."

Myth 2: "Solar panels only work in the summer."

The Truth: Solar panels actually perform more efficiently in cooler temperatures. While there are fewer daylight hours in December and January, the cold Irish air helps the panels conduct electricity better than the scorching heat of a Mediterranean summer.

  • Fact: About 20% of your annual solar production happens during the "off-peak" months (November–February). While lower than summer, this energy is often the most valuable because it directly offsets the expensive grid power used for lighting and heating during the winter.

Myth 3: "Solar is an expensive luxury with no return on investment."

The Truth: Solar is now a high-yield financial asset. Between government supports and rising grid costs, the math has never been more in favor of the homeowner.

  • The €1,800 SEAI Grant: Still active and confirmed for 2026.

  • 0% VAT: Since 2023, you pay zero VAT on domestic solar installations, saving you thousands upfront.

  • The Payback: Most LVP customers see their systems pay for themselves in 6 to 8 years, followed by 20+ years of essentially free electricity.

Myth 4: "You have to be 'off-grid' for it to be worth it."

The Truth: Most successful systems in Ireland are grid-tied. You don't need to cut the cord with the ESB to benefit. In fact, being connected to the grid is now a source of income.

  • The Clean Export Guarantee (CEG): In 2026, suppliers are paying between 18c and 25c per kWh for the excess energy you send back to the grid.

  • The Bonus: The first €400 you earn from selling your extra solar power is completely tax-free.

Myth 5: "Solar panels require constant cleaning and maintenance."

The Truth: They are virtually maintenance-free. Solar panels have no moving parts to break. In Ireland, we have a built-in cleaning system: the rain. Our regular rainfall is usually enough to keep the panels free of dust and debris.

  • Fact: Most panels come with a 25-year performance warranty. Aside from a quick check of your inverter app once a month to ensure everything is humming along, you can "set it and forget it."
